I have the same issue, and have had it for about a month. I dont think its the wheel bearings as the sound doesn't change when going around corners. Currently I'm thinking of changing the prop shaft bearing that sits around the said shaft just in front of the rear diff. I will then if no change check out the rear diff.

Alternator was Not the problem...

My noise is at 85-89 mph...Its a drown, grown from the passenger side front. It vibrates in the floor and the pedals.
The dealer put an alternator in ..why...Its was under CPO.
It did not fix the problem...so,
a new wheel bearing ---not it
A new cv joint---not it
Balanced tires---not
rotated tires ---not
trying control arm bushings now.....

Wonder if it could be worn guibo/flex joint, u-joint, or differential bushings? ...all could cause driveline vibration

I'm going to get diff and X case fluids changed and have a second attempt at diagnosis this time with a new indy mechanic.......as dealer couldn't diagnose it, surprise surprise. I'm also contemplating a partial tranny oil change.

I'm starting to get worried as the noise is getting worse. Its also embarrassing sounds like I'm driving some crappy van/ truck that is on its last legs I'm contemplating being loose of this car as I have had to spend lots of dough recently and if this turns out very expensive its time to part with the X. Will see.

I had the same issue and tried the loading turns which didn't change the sound significantly. Finally used a mechanics stethoscope with the truck on a lift and isolated the left front bearing as the culprit. Had it replaced, and now the X feels and sounds like a new ride. Love it.

As I told Jewlzw, loading the bearings doesn't always tell the tale. I had to put it on a lift, spin the wheels with the motor and use a mechanic's stethoscope to isolate the bad bearing. Had it changed, and it's like driving a new machine.

Hi TmpE86, I have spent alot of $$ and although I have found what seems a great indy, I'm sitting on the issue till before xmas because other things deserve money besides my car.

Thanks for the tip x5sportman! I am hoping mine is something minor, fingers crossed, will post back with updates

Man, this is my noise also. And you are right, julezw. BMW making that noise is like you driving a worn-down jalopy. I hate it.

I've always had this. No one could figure it out. I disconnected my transfer case actuator once, and noise wasn't there. I have a feeling its the T-case.
