Just got the dreaded TRANS Failure Message
Hey u guyz, my transmission has been slipping latley and i finally got the dreaded Trans Failure message... I was debating to change the transmission filter and fluid but now I have no choice but to do this... I have approximately 87k miles on the 2002 x5 4.6is. It might not even be the fluid because i have heard that the torque converter is prone to fail in 4.6 and 4.8 models. I'll keep you guyz posted as to the out come of this. I am definitely going to change the fluid and filter using one of the DIY articles on the forum. I am screwed whether I change the fluid or not so I guess their really isnt any other option for the ultimate driving machine.
I was wondering if I have to keep the X5 level in order to change the fluid and filter because i do not have a ramp or anything that can keep the X level. All I have is a jack. Anyone have any ideas. If this doesnt fix it, I definitely cant afford a new or rebuilt tranny...for now I will have to use my ten speed for transportation which is a big downgrade from riding in a bmw, no leather, no cruise control, no radio etc...Thank You BMW

Can you get hold of some heavy timber - say 10x8inches - as you could build a set of ramps to put the car's wheels to give you a few extra inches? Yes it does need to be level.

Have the vehicle level, make sure the fluid is at the correct temperature when setting the level, and don't get underneath the vehicle if all you have is a jack. It isn't worth the risk.
