What do these keys do & which fuse

Two questions:

1] Is there a fuse or fuses that I can remove to power down the whole computer/nav/cd player system instead of disconnecting the battery?

2] My insurance company has just had my locks changed and supplied new keys (because somebody stole my original key and there was a chance they could steal the car). My new keys consist of two keys with remote built in and also now a key without the remote on the end and a black plastic thin key. What are these two for?

1. I have pulled the fuses in the glove box and rear to power down all the items you mention.

2. The other two keys are the valet key and the template key for making spares, keep em out of the car as your vehicle can still be stolen with them

How does the valet key work? Does it open the car and turn off the alarm but NOT start the car?

Why did the insurance company insist the locks be changed? The dealer can just take the key out of the vehicle system so it won't work any more. I believe you did the right thing but just a note for the future.

BTW I have heard that all keys including the plastic one have an embedded chip to get the vehicle started but to be honest have never tried it myself.

yes the dealer can disable the key code so that the car can`t start... but you can still open the car with it.

Basically the keys were stolen from a locked vehicle (not the X5) along with a portable GPS device. Both were in a glovebox but the theives had a good route around and found them!!

Because the GPS had various addresses programmed in to it, mine being programmed as HOME, the insurance thought there was a high risk of theft. They towed the car away which triggered the tracker who then called me to ask if things were ok. Anyway the insurance company also said that I didn`t have to pay my £370 excess so the episode didn`t cost anything.

For your info, I removed Fuses 7, 73 and 74 to reset the on board monitor, nav system and cd player. Worked a treat, dont know what the stealer had done but when I turned the TV on, the screen just rolled constantly. Anyway a power break did it the world of good.

Glad it worked out for you. I am temporarily living in Poland and already had an X stolen in May so I can understand your apprehension

What kind of tracking system are you using and is it unique to the UK? I probably won't bother as my baby will be back in the US between March and June and I already have a complex second alarm system on the vehicle.

The TV module has settings for the country that you are located in. It probably got reset to another value. Just go into the settings and change it back to your country.
