Chas3, I'm curious about the 2DIN mask. Where do you buy this and what does it look like?

Chas3, I think I see what you're saying. So you get a 2DIN mask like these:
bmw x5double din items - Get great deals on eBay Motors, Electronics items on eBay.com!
Then install the guts like this (I used a carpc as an example):
Double DIN 7" Touchscreen Car GPS PC Computer w/ WIFI GPS, Bluetooth, Mp4 - CAR-PC-9000
and presto...a new head unit? I know I'm drastically simplifying here but this is just for illustration.

Yes, you get a mask like that (I am from Europe, but some usual sources would be ebay/craiglist/car electronics and ICE forums) and then fit a standard unit in there.

In addition, you can get a custom mask and fit whatever display you wish (laptop touch screen, android tablet, etc).

I have a Dynavin in mine, installed by the previous owner, and I'm stripping it out to go back to OEM. Bad radio reception, bad sound quality, totally useless iPod control and screwing up the OBC is not an upgrade as far as I'm concerned.

The Huangilan looks marginally better but I wouldn't spend any money without a very thorough test drive.

If anyone in the UK wants to trade my Dynavin for a 16:9 monitor & BM24 radio module, PM me....

Don't worry, it's just a different case
Btw, are you sure the BM was also removed? 100% of the installs I saw here had the BM still sitting in the trunk, so maybe you still have it.

I was checking it out last night, definitely not there. The nav drive & CD changer are still there though, although obviously no use with the Dynavin, surprised the owner didn't sell them to save some £££s !

I thought the OBC could be left in the vehicle but tucked away in the glove box. So the prior owner took that out too?

BTW, there's a UK company, TV in Motion, []TV in Motion - BMW that claims to be working on a head unit with better integration and retains OBC functionality. Does anyone have any more information on this one?

I am happy with my Hualingan so far. It's a great upgrade for me from the business CD to 7" screen. I got it from fmugur member in this forum. Great support and good unit. The look of Dynavin is not quite designed for X5. Check this thread out for Hualingan install:
