So you want to use the same wheels, then you need to with staggered wheels also, probably the wheel width in front and back differs too much to be able to use same size tires.
I have 255/55-18 winter tires on my 4.6is and any wouldn't use wider tires on winter.
On hard packed snow it would be ok but when there is loose snow or slush on the road you can feel that the tire doesn't get grip from the road but it floats on top of loose snow/slush.

you can get oem 17 or 18 rims on craigslist super cheap (like $200 for all four). just be patient and snap them up.

sounds like he already has the 19's. You could run a 265-50-19 Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow tire on them. It ends up about 1/3" taller than stock, but that doesn't present any problems. They ride really nice and get great traction in the snow. I picked up a set of 19x8.5" wheels pretty cheap and put those tires on for winter last year. I run them all winter season even tho the only time I ever need them is when I go up skiing. But saves me swapping tires around and they cost less than my summer tires and seem to last longer too. 18's look kinda weak on a 4.6is, IMHO. These don't look too bad, tho not as good as the OEM 20's.
