Lets see if we can clear this up.. The pre-facelift E53 uses the M62TU 4.4/4.6V8 with double VANOS. The 04> facelifted X5's use the N62/N62TU with Valvetronic which is a motor and lever system that's sole purpose is to infinitely vary the intake valve's lift and duration. They also utilize VANOS which varies cam timing.

I've always bought non Valvetronic M62 powered BMW's because of the relative simplicity of the valve train. I think intermediate levers and variable intake lift sound great on paper but in the real world of Heat cycles, high rpm, long service intervals etc, they dont hold up well over time. Thats an incredibly complex valve train in the N62 and im amazed it works as well as it does. I'm not surprised though that it makes a little extra noise here and there with all that hardware moving arond in there.

Sorry, ive been out of town and havent been online lately. You said to listen around 2:25, but around that time you were walking around the door heading towards the back. It sounded to me like your idle finally settled and your belt is chirping. Belts are sometimes made of different materials now, so instead of cracking, they actually wear away. VANOS rattle is pretty common, but it will sound distinctly like a diesel, otherwise a little noise is normal...i dont even leave the plastic engine cover on, so mines even louder. How many miles are on your belt?

Supposedly there are gauges that measure the depths of the grooves for these new style belts, but at 75k, it couldn't hurt to spend the $30 or so needed for a new belt and see if that solves your chirping noise. Can you blip the throttle real quickly and make it chirp/squeel even louder? I hope it's something simple like that.

Sounds like a belt to me too... maybe a pulley?

My E46 made a similar noise and I replaced the Tensioner & Deflection pulleys.

I would try the belt first, but to me it sounds more like a pulley. Belt would need to be changed anyway. Did you have any solvents or cleaners fall on your belt? Like I mentioned earlier, I cleaned my engine and got the same sound until I put some baby powder on it over night. Did not go away rite away but its all silent now.

Neither one of those videos has a single bit of belt squeel...the first video is the cameraman whistling, the second video is the guys tires hitting dry spots while going overtop his own donuts and the tires making a burnout noise.

Pisendar, in regards to your second video...it still sounds like belt to me. Have you blipped the throttle quickly like I suggested and see if it chirps? Try squirting a little dish soap at the belt while the engine is running (on the groveside, and watch your hands for the fan or pullets moving) and see if it stops. If it does, garden hose off the belt and then replace it.
