Yes, it can be coded. So dealer or someone with BMW coding tools can do it. BMW X5 heater usually comes without water pump so X5 electrical water pump has to be coded to work with the heater.

Yeah. In E53 it is usually Webasto Thermotop Z.
It has been very useful during last few weeks here in Finland. Just this morning heated the engine and cabin from -27 deg C before starting up

Yeah, all BMW dealers around refuse to activate this. They say I have to add all tubes in the car, and its not possible to do it any other way. Of course this is $2000 to do. Any suggestions how to convince the shops to do this the cheap way?

I heard that BMW dealers over here doesn't want make that kind of coding either. Luckily we have quite active BMW enthuastics community here in Finland and individuals with coding capability are quite easy to find. You might want to check from some of your local BMW car forums.
