Cigarette Lighter Turn off when Ignition is off?

Does your cigarette lighter stay on when your ignition is off?

I have a 2004 4.4. The cig lighter stays "on" when the engine is turned off. Can this setting be changed? I would like to have my cig lighter turn off when ignition is off, without rewiring or in stalling a power switch. I dont want to unplug whatever is plugged in everytime I turn off the engine.

I believe all BMW's through 2006 leave the lighters powered with the key off. After 06 they turn off with the key.

I believe that is correct. My 2005 has "power ports" that stay hot; my wife's 2011 5-series turns off.

Not sure that is an accurate statement. My '08 MCoupe's lighter is always live, just like my '04 X5.

Its based on new models and facelifts, as they come out, not on 'after year 2006'.

That is weird but I could be wrong, that info came from the dealer when I asked.

My 2005 X5 is on all the time and I like it that way.
If the phone need charging it doesn't get interrupted
when the key goes off.

Came in handy the other night during a storm when
the power went out and my phone was just about dead.
Just went to the garage plugged it in and 30 minutes
later we're good to go.

The 5 series on the other hand is a pain. If I'm running
errands and want to leave the phone in the car to charge
no way will that happen.

The receptacal in the glovebox is switched. Get an adapter and you're all set.
