reinforcement plate - under carriage = engine trans skid plate

I just completed a coolant flush. What a pain to remove that reinforcement plate. Even with a 30 gallon air compressor and air tools, getting a wrench or socket on the top side to hold those lock nuts is something else.

Has anyone left this plate off without any adverse effects?

BMW cautions “Driving without reinforcement plate is not permitted!” with a sticker under the vehicle as does Bentley provides the same caution – “Do not drive the vehicle without the front end reinforcement installed. Damage to chassis or front end may result.” Four of the bolts for the reinforcement plate also are used to secure the stabilizer bar mounts. I can understand its use as a skid plate to protect the trans and oil pan, but I do not go off roading.

I am considering fabricating some two inch wide x 1/4 inch thick steel to use as cross bar to allow easier access for future work under the vehicle. Certainly would allow more room to work when changing the engine oil or transmission fluid.

Any input appreciated.
