My 2002 3.0d also doesn't have that plug.

Most likely the wiring is there behind the glovebox.

When I get the car back from the mechanic maybe i'll pop off that cover and see what lies beneath. If anyone can confirm either way please feel free to chime in, thanks

Most every option is prewired at the factory. That is why so many retro-fit projects go so easily. Most likely there is a connector behind where the flashlight is mounted and you'll need to find the fuse in the fuse box to power it up.

The plug is there. Saw it when I removed my glove box. Just remove the cover.

Look for the 12v outlet just behind the glovebox, in the passenger footwell towards the center of the car,
You can plug it in there and run it into the glovebox pretty easily.
