the preliminary on the dc fire was that she hit something in the garage like a propane tank or gas can and released the flammable. i've seen a few cars catch fire from spinning the tires until the tire actually caught fire. as far as x5's being firebombs.. as a firefighter that responds to the interstate, i've been to hundreds of vehicle fires, none of them x5's. i did recently have a 2010 760Li burn to a crisp, but i believe the owner was tired of paying his loan.

My x5 is toast, literlly.

So today after driving my x5 25 miles from work, and a fresh car wash, I pull up to my destination(picking up groceries) I turn the car off- mind the car was running perfect no overheating. I pull the key out and that's when I noticed smoke coming from the floor on the passenger side footwell. Literally 25 seconds later, I've got flames coming from that side. 3 airbags deployed smashing the windshield-luckily the fire was extinguished before it burned the whole car up. It's a bone stock all around 02 3.0 with 119,000 miles in perfect running order. Zero problems since I bought it 3 years ago with 99,000 miles on it. WTF? About an hour befor that I was napping in the car (i work weird hours and waiting for the store to open) so that easily could have been me in one of those articles-dead. Even worse this is my wife's car in which she totes our 6 month old around in. What a frigging day. I'm assuming the car is totaled-breaks my heart cause we loved the car. So far been trouble free great running vehicle. Are electrical fires common with BMWs or is this an x5 thing? I've never had this happen to any one of the lesser pieces of shit that I've had before it-never had a car catch fire period. I'm a mechanic and keep my cars in the best running condition I can-this absolutely made me feel helpless.

my e38 caught fire when a headlight bulb cracked and shorted, on the uk model '97 728 there is no fuse on the front lights as far as i can find the loom caught fire quickly followed by the headlight plastic and inner arch. I was lucky i keep a fire extinguisher in the boot and a smaller one under the seat since i had an e30 catch fire from a split fuel line back in the 90s. only 2 car fires I've ever been involved in or had any first hand knowledge of and both bmws.
I bought a loom, inner arch, light and some other bits from a breakers and fixed up the 7 but spliced in some fuses, what a terrible piece of electrical design it wouldn't surprise me if the e53 has similar issues being closely related to the e38.
BTW: dont ignore the "check low beam" message

Beefstew, I know a guy who lost his 4.6 the same exact way. Came home from shopping. Parked it. Took 10 steps, and called the fire dept. Something in the dash caught fire. Car turned to a crisp by the time the fire dept put it out. He had a fire extinguisher too, but couldnt get to it. Car would not unlock.

I'm reading all of this with my mouth hanging open. HOLY SH!T!! This is crazy!!! I really hope none of my vehicles ever go up in smoke. That would seriously suck!! It's not going to stop me from owning them but I'm going to seriously look into adding a fire extinquisher somewhere on each vehicle. Geez!!

This isn't new. I've seen quite a few of these burn to a crisp. And yes, I too have been looking for the OE fire extinguisher.
