Question Continental ExtremeContact DWS - treadwear indicator at only 11kmi

I've had my Conti ExtremeContact DWS's for just 9-mos on my '06 4.8is and the rear's are already worn out. Mileage to date is only 11,108. This just can't be right.

Has anyone else noticed this quick of wear on their 4.8is with the ExtremeContact DWS's???

I have to say I'm a bit surprised. Driving is 80/20 City/Highway too and not aggressive as it is the wife's vehicle. I called the Tirerack and was instructed to order a new set of rear's, send the old ones back, and I should be up for the prorate refund, but I'm not sure how that will work after reading the fine print in the warranty section. TireRack is acting as the middle man here so I will report back what happens.

I know the relevance may be limited, but (just for reference sake) I put these on my 2006 MINI Cooper S 5 months ago and after 16k miles I still have lots of tread left. I know the weight difference between these vehicles is large, but I would definitely expect a lot more mileage from them than 11k miles.

have you had an alignment done recently? i know that if things aren't ok on the alignment front it's possible you'll eat through tires.

Yes, 4-wheel alignment performed at the time of install by BMW.

Uh oh, I was planning on a set of these after my Diamaris wear out. I've read other people claiming 30k+ on X5s, though I'm not sure if they were on the 19" or 20" (although that shouldn't make much difference).

its all about the alignment. get an alignment everytime you buy anew set of tires. its like an insurance that your tires will have the best wear results

continental (and tirerack, etc) all have this tire listed as a passenger car tire. why did they ever sell it to you as a SUV tire? of course it can't hold up to the weight. most of their DWS tires are not rated for the weight anyway. they do make one SUV tire, not much choice there.

consumer reports says they only have fair tread life. after reading their website, they talk about winter and snow performance, and their 'DWS' indicator. complete BS.

this is not a winter tire and is now winter rated. the DWS indicator simply shows you the depth of tread, no magic here. they would be dangerous at any winter temperature since they do not have a winter compound in them. just another reason i will never buy a continental tire!

i hope you know these come on the new X5M in the 20inch size...i highly doubt BMW would put a tire not capable to keep up with the vehicle they are put on. I have the DWS on my 4.6. i have about 7k on em, i will check my wear when i get home.

btw i like these tires very much. they handled great this weekend in the mountains with slushy roads in 3 degree temps.

well, i retract my statement as to them coming on X5M's, but i bought mine off a X5M and i like them very much.
