Quite a few including me have done it, the problem may lie in you having an 03 instead of an 02 or earlier. If you look at the back of the headlight and the timestamp is 10/02 or later they can't be opened as BMW used a different glue... I had to buy a set of used OEM headlights from a member here to mod as mine couldn't be opened.
