Not quite. Your statement is true, but in that case, even the x-drive X5 wouldn't go anywhere. For the pre x-drive X5, only one wheel needs to have no traction.

All of the above doesn't consider the effect of traction control, which does work, so it is a theoretical situation.

Ralphy, you need new tires. Your X5 (regardless if it has xDrive or not) is good in the snow. (Yes, xDrive, found on the 2004-2006 E53 makes it better) but TIRES are more important for normal every day/on-road in ice/snow.

For new tires, you can search the forums here, or you can take the advice from someone who has an X5 and lives in CT and buy a pair of Michelin MXV4s

I liked my MXV4 tires, and they lasted really well, but they were all season tires, not winter tires. They paled in comparison to my Dunlop Wintersport M3s, the Blizzaks I bought for my daughters, or true Michelin winter tires like the X-Ice Xi2.
