Worst example of an oil filter?

Hi

Just changed the oil on my X5, recently bought and still tidying up, but wanted to get new oil & filter in it as I had no idea when last done.

This is the filter, and as you can see it's in pretty abominable condition, and what's more I'm pretty sure is not even the right one. It's about 20m shorter that the Mann filter I replaced it with.

Thought it was worth sharing and wondered if anybody had seen anything worse. Also I thought I should probably change oil & filter (or just oil?) again shortly to ensure there's no crap left that the old filter hadn't cleaned out.

Thoughts?

Craig

Yes, it is the wrong filter. Apart from any filter quality issues, their catalogue shows this filter for earlier 2.5 and 3.0 engines, in the E34/E36/E39. This one is only one digit out from the filter that they show for the 3.0 in the X5, a WR2592P.

Not a bad idea to do a second oil and filter change, IMO.

Cheap insurance to change it, I'd do it just for the peace of mind.

Ditto on the oil and filter change.

On a related topic, does anyone know if there is a magnetic drain plug to replace the stock?

Jesus H Christ, that's the worst oil filter I've ever seen. I'd agree to doing a second filter and oil change again after a few miles.

This is something that really annoys me where you find a previous owner has been just downright careless with what they're doing. I had an E34 a few years ago and when I went to investigate why the headlight beam adjuster wasn't working I found that a previous owner had simply disconnected the loom at the headlights for some reason. I mean WTF .... why would anyone do that and just leave it that way ???

My current X5 was reasonably well taken care of by the previous owner though I must say. I haven't found anything major where they were just careless.

then they cry and complain saying that BMW's quality is not good at all!!!!! idiots. I always change my oil in every new (used) car I buy withing the first few days. Friends call me paranoid but this comes up over and over again. An 06 Jetta had oil that looked like it was a diesel's, over 1.5qt low, and I doubt it was even synthetic (can't prove it though).

Magnetic plugs may be available, but there are no ferric metals in your engine to stick to it... Unless they make a magnet to collect aluminum there is really no need at all.

Weasel is one TheAnswerMen on this Board!

You ought to see the mag drain plug on my '75 HD Shovelhead; looks like a Chia Pet when I drain that oil, .
