admranger - sorry for the late reply. Yeah it's right there and heaps sketchy haha.. I ended up having to drop the exhaust to even clean out the Allen key hole for the fill point cap screw due to it having a hard resin in there..

I've found on other research that the level is actually governed by the much larger plug on the bottom, right next the drain plug? It's the much larger socket head cap screw and inside that is a kind of snorkel that runs up to the top of the oil.. so when it's filled to the correct level it reaches the top of the snorkel and trickles down out the large hole... Anyone else do it this way?
I went off a DIY post on here and pumped the oil in the fill point on the side until it started coming back out there.. Now I'm thinking I might not have got the level exactly right if this other way is the correct way :/ (even though it's shifting better now and reduced the frequency of the shunt into first... it might have fixed it completely if done this other way)

Since the ATF expands when warm, once the car is started, is there any reason to keep putting the fill cap on?
Drain, fill, (fill plug on), start car, (fill plug off), fill, (fill plug on), shift through gears, (fill plug off), fill, (fill plug on), heat tranny to 30-40C, (fill plug off), fill, (fill plug on), finish.
Why not just leave cap off once the engine is started? ATF shouldn't be leaking out at that point any way.

That's how the DIY thread I read said how to do it..
Pump the oil in with the motor running and shift through the gears... then put the plug back in..
I'm just confused as I said in my last post.. the large plug next to the drain plug has been said to show the correct oil level in another thread.. not just when the oil comes back out the fill point hole :/ ?

ZF Germany video worth a look...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pyp9DHPKfHo

1:20 pulls into ZF germany see only bmw's parked in lot/ inside
2:20 see immaculately clean shop (more like a lab)
3:00 starts with screen flashes of how trans should be changed according to experts at ZF

fyi- i am of the camp to leave it alone but as we know there is a big divide.

video is pretty cool nonetheless

Why on earth he would video himself driving for that long I have no idea.. Would be good to see a much more involved one done on a "X5", especially as there are 2 ways I've heard of viewing the filling oil spilling back out. That is the fill point on the side.. or from what I've read a long tee-piece tube that runs up inside the larger Allen key hole to the correct level inside.. This hole is located next to the drain plug on the bottom.. Just want to know which is the correct one to show the correct level...

I changed mine to help eliminate the kick down into first gear and I used the viewing of the oil coming back out the fill point.. It helped the kick down a lot! but just stumbled across another thread that mentioned this other way, which I think sounds like it'd be designed to be used for that.. Just second guessing the correct technique..
The video was obviously of a different gearbox and didn't have the larger plug on the bottom of the pan therefore the side fill point was used.. Just wondering on this particular gearbox if it is to be done different or if people are just sticking to the old technique

Just did mine..I stripped the drain Plug. Had to chisel it out by banging with a hammer. You can get a better plug from Advanced auto for $4. M18x1.5..

The large aperture in the pan is the fill hole. It requires a 17mm hex socket to undo the plug (torqued quite high, so may require a helper bar). You'll need a tube or similar to pump ATF in, as there's a T-piece at the top of the inlet hole. With the ATF at the correct temp, and car running, slowly add fluid until it starts to trickle out. This is the correct level. Replace plug while car still running. Drain and re-fill system again in a few weeks to dilute older fluid that can't be removed from the torque converter, until you've got mostly new fluid coming out of the system. Job's done when the fluid coming out of the drain hole is new. This process may require a few drains/top-ups. It is recommended to replace the filter and clean magnets/pan BEFORE starting this whole process.

Cheers kvc.. That's pretty much what I read before and you confirming that make me confident in doing it that way.. Cheers mate I'll definately be back under the car in the near future.. I mean it makes sense since there's the 17mm socket head bolt there that it's there for a reason.
Do u know if this filled to the correct level will eliminate the kick from the gearbox when the car shifts down to 1st when coming to a stop?
