Someone else with an oil leak!!
It seems I have sprung a leak since I had my timing chain guards replaced. A few days after it was done I noticed an oil leak, not major, but not minor either! So I checked the oil a while after to see how much I am losing and the dipstick was over the max, telling me its been overfilled. Since then I have let approx 2 litres out to bring it back to normal. Is there any seals or gaskets that are likely to fail due to overfilling, or is it blind investigative work only? Thanks FYI: '01 4.4 sport |

![]() I checked my oil level today and its in the middle of the dipstick markers. I also noticed the leak seems to have stopped. Which leads me to think it may be the sump gasket. Depending of course on how deep the sump is, my thought process is that if the gasket has failed then anything at/above that height will leak out. And now that I am 'low' on oil (not at max) it has gone below that level preventing oil from escaping. Anyway, spoke to my mechanic friend today and he is understandably indifferent about my logic, but will take a look at it next week for me and sort it out regardless. Thoughts? |

Still in the process of playing the oil leak game with our 04.....The main one was at the alternator plate. I guess there's some o-rings where the oil lines pass through this plate and into the block that require the engine to be removed to have replaced. That was a fun one....The second was on the vacuum pump thingy-majiger on the back of the intake manifold. Havent replaced that one yet, but it's next on my list. If your alternator and front right of your engine is covered in oil, have those o-rings checked.

If you had 2 litres too much oil in the engine, it's likely it was simply weeping out and with the right oil level has now fixed itself.
