Rear Wiper is wiping my license plate, and not window...and other issues

Hey Guys,

Just got a used 2006 BMW X5 E53 with 47,000 miles on it and man am I loving it!

There are a few weird things that I am trying to figure out though. The other day I tried using my rear-window wiper and it ended up wiping in an upside down motion, instead of wiping the window

As bizarre as that sounds, I am not sure what the heck is up with this or how to go about fixing it. Any Ideas?

Also - I am trying to program the garage door opener remote buttons, but they arent responding - I press the 1 and 3 buttons simultaneously for 20 seconds to reset them but im not getting the green LED flash that the manual says - in fact I dont get anything.

Any help is appreciated!! Thanks!

The wiper was mounted on the wrong side. For instance, it should be on the driver side of the rear windshield - reaching towards the passenger side, but yours was mounted on the passenger side - reaching towards, well, the license plate. You need to unfasten and switch it to the other side.

Chas3 is correct about the wiper balde and for the Homelink transmitter, 1 and 3 should clear the code, but sometimes mine does the same thing. I just hold it for 20 to 30 seconds and then give it a go. Now sometimes, with the new garage door openers, they have a rolling code. To set that up, you need to hit the learn button on the opener its self and then press one of the Homelink buttons and the remote transmitter at the same time and see if that goes.

As far as the wiper blades go - that certainly is fascinating. Im not sure what they were thinking when they mounted it...

Transmitter - 1 and 3 being pushed in for 20-30 seconds doesnt even give me an LED indicator that its been reset - in fact, ive never even seen the LED indicator come on. Could it be a blown fuse?

Im completely new to X5s, so this is a whole new learning experience for me.

The rear wiper assembly is attached with a bolt. Sometimes that bolt comes loose. So those who don't know, stare at the wiper hanging vertically like a limp d*&k, then pop the cap off and tighten er up. Just remove that black cap, loosen the bolt, swing the arm in the right position, tighten and voila, you're done.
As for the transmitter, press a button and hold it. Press no.1 and see if you see and indicator. If not, the LED is dead or the transmitter is not operational. Check fuses or a short.

I'll check the fuses as I believe that might be the issue as well.

While Im here, I was wondering if the X5's without cd changers come prewired for one? So I all I have to do is basically buy a BMW changer & bracket, and plug it in. (Non DSP)

The cd changer would depend. My 01 4.4 came with the harness ready to go. It was just plug and play. But my buddy's 04 4.4 did not. I guess it would depend on the package.

Not to insult you, but you do have the ignition in the on position when you are trying to erase or program the homelink don't you? When the codes are clear, the green lights blink very fast. That's when you release them.

No worries - Ive tried resetting this in the 1st, 2nd, and completely on position on the ignition dial. No difference. I checked over the fuses in the back compartment and didnt find one for the transmitter remotes, is the fuse located elsewhere?
