this is not an answer to your question, but my 2005 4.4 burns about 1/2 litre /month. When I told BMW, their response was indifference.

Not to change the direction of your thread, but, 10,000 mile oil change intervals are not ridiculous. They can actually go to 15,000 miles with oe filters/quality oil and have been doing so successfully for over a decade now. How many failed BMW engines have you heard about where the cuase was the oil?

Pretty standard and "normal" oil consumption, imo...
Even if your X was nearly new, the US BMW dlr reply would be that a quart every ~2500-3,000 miles would be in BMW's tolerance/usage range. Keep an eye for increased usage, but I wouldn't sweat it. GL, mD

Thank God....I'm not the only one with a 3.0 that is consuming oil.
I've owned several other bimmers but never had one that consumed as much as this. 5k miles, i've added 2qts of oil. I'm using BMW OE 5W30. |

I've had three M54 engines, 1 N52, and 1 N54, in my last five vehicles. All BMW six cylinders. They all used some oil, but the M54 in the X5 used twice as much as any of the others. I think the weight of the vehicle is a factor, the engine is just working harder.
