It needs to be reprogrammed at the dealer in order to work properly.

You have the wrong cluster. Well thats not totally true. It uses a different EMS that what is in your car. There are a lot of threads on this. Use the search to find specifics, but as a short answer, not everything will work on the4.8is cluster. Since your X is an '01, you need a 4.6IS cluster. If you are using a used cluster, it will not work because the old one is coded for the vehicle it came out of. You need to use a new one so it can be coded correctly, VIN, EMS, ECU, etc.

Actually I just checked the post I am wrong. It will work, oil temp and LED will not work. I was right about the 4.6is cluster though. It will work, with some mods. If an indy has a GT1, it can be coded in less that and hour. It is noted there will be bugs. Such as some gauges not working when the X is cold and such. General rule is '00-03 would use a 4.6is, '04-'06 would use a 4.8IS

I ve got a 4.8 cluster on my 02 X5 4.4 The thing is that it CAN work properly - even the oil temp and LEDs. But unfortunately the process of coding is a personal secret of a programmer and I can not share it

PS it can be even fitted onto 3.0 and 3.0D but in this case Oil Temp and LEDs will not function properly anyway (this post is a small TIP ).
