Extended warranty or Self insure
Please help me decide wether to get extended warranty or just self insure. I just bought my 05 E53 3.0i with 48k miles. I saw the dealer maintainace info and it looks like its well maintained by the previous owner. I am probably going to put less than 10k miles per year. Thank you

Peace of mind Vs. individual risk tolerance Vs. $ Vs. statistics....first two will be different for everyone. Also depends if you are a DIY person.
Statistically you are likely to loose out by purchasing a (reputable) extended warranty Vs. self-insure ...dem actuaries are purty smart  ....but one or two big ticket items would make it worthwhile. The probability of 'stuff' going wrong for a 6+ yr old X is also more likely - 'coincidentally' just after the original warranty + CPO expires....more of them smart actuarial types counting the future beans.No doubt you will get answers on here from 'Def. yes, these beasts are $$$ to repair, and I have already saved $$$ over the warranty cost" to 'Def. no, I spent $$$ on the warranty and have only used it x times'. I would just self-insure but YMMV...your roll of the dice

Left front window regulator We also thought about this decision, but for us, the peace of mind was worth it. FYI, I put in my experience in the following thread a few weeks ago: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-warranty.html Different people have had different experiences. You need to look at all of them and do what you think is best for you.

B-Man,
There are pages of "extended warranty" threads here, via Search Tab; all contain the same kind of anecdotal info you might get here, just more of it. Imo, I would take a Pasadena, and 'self-insure', esp in light of the ~10k annual miles. Warranty Direct is my Fave, but I didn't 'come out even' as I had very few fixes over a 4 yr program. The only major item that hangs in the back of everyone's mind is the auto trans for those of you with one. It is the only reason I would consider an ext warranty program, if I had an AT, and even that may well be worth taking the risk. GL, mD

Dang b-man, where do you get an X fixed in Jackson, WY? I have a Zurich drivetrain only warranty and sleep well at night knowing I have the coverage.

dinan e39 we got a good reputable indy here and most of the BMW owners got their cars fixed there and were quite happy. They also even offer a 2 year unlimited miles warranty on their work. Where did you got the Zurich drivetrain only warranty?

I personally like the self insure + DIY route. For the 3 year warranty for $3500, I'd rather sock $100 away into a money market account and tap into it if you ever have a serious repair bill. For the most part, the things that will crop up are annoying but not terribly expensive to DIY. Brakes every couple of years for ~$400, an occassional CV (I do the whole joint for ~$110), window regulators, FSR, regular PM, etc. If something like a transmission or another big ticket item comes up, pay it from the reserve fund you've been contributing, and if that failure never happens before you get rid of it, you have an extra couple of grand in your account. Of course the discipline to set it up and stick with it is the hard part
