X5 burning/losing oil?

I haven't driven the truck for about 5 days. I checked the oil dipstick and there is almost NOTHING! The last time I had an oil change was in June 08!

Well, does that mean you think the oil leaked out in the past 5 days while parked,
(which should be quite noticeable), or that you haven't checked your oil since it
was last changed in June 2008?

If it's the latter, you might have consumed 2-3 qts, the oil change service might
have short filled you, (frequent, in my experience), or that missing oil has been
combusted and/or leaked in the past 9 months.

Check oil light is not necessarily an "early warning system"...
my original question: have you pulled the dipstick since that
oil change 10 months ago?

No I haven't checked it. But there have been no signs of leaks as well (my garage floor is absolutely dry).

Jay..Did you drive the X and let the engine warm up and then let the car sit for 5 - 10 mins? That gives the true oil level of the car when you check the dipstick after the car has been warmed up and you let the car sit for 5 to 10 mins. If you did that and the dipstick was indeed that low, top it off with some Castrol 5w - 30 and get that oil level up to where it should be.

I burn a quart every 5000 miles or so, my E53s did also.

I tend to have the same problem , i know that the x5's do swallow up oil i do not have a problem with that. my issue is from time to time in idle my '06 4.4 will guzzle up a heavy dose of white smoke and it takes me some accelerating to get the bulk of the smoke out. any ideas or any posts as to what might be able to help?

thanks

ps im very new to this forum but have very much enjoyed looking around

at the top of the page where you see home , forums , articles , try the search for oil separator or ccv .
that sounds like your problem
here is a link to a thread with good information

http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ve-issues.html

this video explains the vacuum causing oil consumption at idle and shows removing the dipstick to test for excessive vacuum . also shows procedure to replace the diaphragm on a 7 series which is almost identical to an X5 .

YouTube - How to change a dead OSV on a BMW E38 7 Series with an M62 V8 4.4L engine.

EDIT . correct info for N 62 engine added to post 12 . pic shows location of ccv next to throttle .
