the dreaded lurch ...again, but please read
i complained bitterly to my BMW service centre, from whom i purchased the car, and they said they could take a look. when i picked it up they were busy and didnt comunicate in any detail to me about there findings, just to see how it goes. this was a few months ago (previously posted about) anyway i,m here to tell you they have fixed it. now when i slow to a stop there is no lurch at all, and if i slow to a halt and ever so slightly am rolling forward all i feel is a gentle shift into 1st gear. ok all good, but now for me anyway, here comes the really interesting part. when i purchased the car, 2005 3.0d auto i was clearly made aware that while it was a 6 speed auto, it would only use 5 gears in sport or manual mode, i.e. it would not shift into 6 gear, in fact there were only 5 gears displayed on the instrument panel. i dont generally use the sport or manual modes so hadn't paid much attention to it, except that is for today when huh now i have a 6th gear displayed and i can, in manual mode shift all the way up to and including 6th gear wow the dealer has to have done a software upgrade, so looks like there is hope after all at least for diesels. unless of course the dealer has done his own software, which i very much doubt. so for me at least all ends well, just turned 100,000 km and couldn't be happier with my X |

don't want to burst the happy bubble, but this magic fix could be as simple as resetting the tranny adaptations which would make the shifting smoother and feel different for a short time. when the transmission begins it's "learning" phase again it will go back to lurching and doing all the strange things it did before............i think. i could also be completely full of sh*t. i hope the fix works.

yeah i real happy.....but answer me this does your car have the 6 speed tranny and does it only use the 5 speeds in sport/manual mode??
cause if it does , like mine did, then mine now has to of had a software upgrade so it can now access the 6th gear i remember the early V8 Jeep grand cherokees having the same thing happen with gears, |

'05 4.4 V8 with a 6spd ZF tranny. i definitely have 6th gear in sport mode and also have the latest software. however, i still have the lurch, the reverse delay and the occasional extremely violent 1st to 2nd shift.

Are you sure you didn't always have the sixth gear and just didn't notice it! When you put the car into sport mode it will tend not to use sixth gear, but I am fairly sure that you should always have access to it in steptronic (manual) mode... I also have have 6 speed ZF gearbox in '06 3.0D

i dont know now, you have me doubting myself.
however the dealer when i purchased the car was very clear in stating that the car locked out 6th gear in sport and manual mode. and when test driving it i seem to remember him hi lighting the fact that the 6th digit did not appear on the panel. i thought at the time he was making a big thing of it and maybe he was sick of people coming back complaining "hey wheres 6th" so he was getting in early my car is an 05 so maybe the 06 models software incorporated 6th. maybe i now have the same software????? i really dont know, however that said i,m happy not to have the wack in the back anymore when i stop. |
