2004 vs 2005 X5 4.8is (relability) 44,000miles

I am looking into purchasing the 4.8is. Should i be worried about purchasing the '04 version since this was the first year they came out with the 4.8?

I know the tranny tends to go out on these cars. Should i be worried with an 04 4.8is with 44k on it?

Any suggestions or advices appreciated

Thank you!

'04 was a mid life refresh, not a new model. Refreshed engine and transmission, as well as the new transfer case, but the rest pretty much remained the same. I wouldn't be as concerned about an '04 as I would about an '07 E70, for example.

Also, many of the issues were to do with the changeover, and caused problems that were resolved in the following months. At this point in time, I wouldn't worry about the reliability of an '04 vs an '05.

Transmissions are a bit of a gamble, and don't seem to be too tied in to how many miles are on them. If it drives OK, and shifts fine, I would stop worrying about it until (and if) it fails.

I have had five BMW stereo systems from the basic through the Logic 7, and don't notice much difference, so I am probably not the one to ask. I think you need to listen to it and decide for yourself, you will be the one either regretting it or not noticing the difference.

Personally, I think it is an advantage not to have navigation, it is an antiquated system.

the 02+ BMW nav is pretty decent. The '00 and earlier is pretty much useless however..

That said - google maps on my blackberry is still way better....

I thought nav was standard on the "is" model. no? Pretty sure it was on the 4.6 anyways..

I don't know about that. I've seen "is's" without navi. Maybe first 02 model 4.6 was standard

Well there goes that plan. I was laying in bed last night not able to sleep. And I started crunching numbers in my head to see if I could swing buying a 07-ish X5. I guess I should do some searching on 07 common problems huh?
