Secondary pump drama

So here’s my situation. During the past months my secondary pump has been
working for about 2 min. every morning on start up. My pump is very loud and sounds
like a supercharger. Well yesterday morning on start up, the pump made a weird noise
and then immediately stopped. Then I noticed the SEL on my dash. I checked the glove box fuses and sure enough the larger 50 amp fuse was blown. I guess my pump burned
out? I changed the fuse and this morning the same thing happened, for the exception of the secondary pump not coming on at all…..
Can these pumps be repaired? A new secondary pump is $625/tax here in TO.

I just found a used one for $100. The guy says he tested it & it works fine. Going to pick it up Monday evening (75 km drive)
Hopefully it's just the pump I need and not the valve too.
I'll try my best to do a DIY write up with pics....
(should be an easy Re/Re)?
Thanks Zulu95

Dumb question, where is the fuse located for the secondary pump? Where in the glove department?

It was one of the big 50 amp red fuses. I think #2?

That I'm unsure about. I haven't had a chance to listen to the pump when I turn my car on.. and honestly I don't notice it nor hear it from inside the cabin when I start it before I head to work. Does the pump only come on during cold weather? Here currently we are having around 5-9 degrees Cel during the morning

I had this issue with my E46 with a M54 2.5L engine. Its close to the one in the X5 3.0L. I changed out the rubber hoses because they crack overtime and can cause lack of suction. I also ran Seafoam though the pump to clean it up. My pump made loud thumping noises and would shake for the first 2 min during a cold start. After the new hoses and Seafoam, it dosen't do it and runs much quieter during a cold start. Couldn't hurt to try cleaning it and see if it might just be clogged.

Pour Seafoam into the air hose from air pump to engine port before the engine is first started in the morning. The hose will hold just over an ounce of Seafoam. Reconnect the hose and run the car 5 seconds so the air pump blows the Seafoam into the exhaust port. Repeat this fill and restart 3 more times only running the engine 5 seconds so the secondary air pump runs. Then let the engine sit 15 minutes and warm up the car. There will be significant amounts of Seafoam carbon burnoff in the form of white smoke. The carbon burnoff will clean exhaust areas in the path to the O2 sensors that measure secondary air flow.
