TriX, do the chain guides now if you never done it since you have the tranny out. It's easy to take the engine out now and work on it on a stand. You might want to change the seals as well. I found this chain guides problem a while back on the e39 forum and posted here but nobody replied. So, I guess at that time no X5 ran into this issue but now it looks like it's a common problem to X5s as well.
I am also replacing all the rubber and plastic pipes and hoses around the engine. Good luck with your tranny, that's a harder project I guess.
Not sure I will buy the tools but I will let you know if I do.
