i am contemplating this too, but just worried it might be too loud for my liking....hence why i was wondering if used a smaller resonator then our original one....
pic is courtesy of NCX....from an older thread...the resonator is massive!!!! if anyone has used different resonators, let me know!!!

I just read a thread where someone mentioned that they lost power bc of the x pipe. Apparently it was installed in a bad spot. Does anyone have pictures of the best place to install? I'm scared to go thru with this and then lose power...

I wonder if this piece would work, good flow? but toned down a bit rather then just the bare x-pipe?
Part is Dynomax Ultra Flo X-Pipe Muffler 17552, i'm sure there are other ones available....or just use x-pipe and let the rear mufflers tone it down, or up........

Not with X-pipe...Power lost with straight pipe.

So I bit the $150 bullet ($114 labor, $35 shipped for 2.25" x-pipe) and to be honest...I expected more sound. Outside on a quiet day I can slightly hear a difference at idle, blipping the throttle I can't really notice much of a difference other than the stock popping is now more pronounced, but thats irrelevant since the engine doesnt rev nearly as fast in gear as it can at idle. About the only time I can tell is when the radio is off/low and while decelerating or partial throttle input while driving because I can hear what I would call a slight drone/resonance but that actually sounds good.

I expected it to sound like my 740iL when I did the Magnaflow 14816's...went from quiet and dosile to sounding like an E39 M5. No popping, noticeable idle change and sounds very strong, not a bit of drone, etc.

I made sure the shop measured and installed the new xpipe in the exact same location where the xpipe portion inside the stock resonator sits front to rear to ensure the exhaust pulse paths didnt get messed up, causing power loss. At this point I imagine this mod sounds the best outside of the car for people on the street because it's only a slight difference inside. Oh well.

Well, was it worth it?

..where can i find the exact dimensions for the X-Pipe location?

Ehh, its debatable. I spent about 2x that to do the exhaust on the 7, but thats also two mufflers and custom bracketing for a huge, noticeable difference. As I said, its minor inside but I bet it sound much better outside. I've listened as the X drove away and it was definately muffled, so I'll have to find someone again to drive it away so i can hear it. Inside, it's only slightly noticeable in certain situations.

As for the location, I just told them to cut off the old resonator (which is essentially a muffled x-pipe internally anyways), measure how far back the stock x is and then to locate the new x in the same front-to-rear location. I haven't inspected their work, but I don't have any loss of power, so I can assume the guy was able to read a tape measure and located it properly.

Quick update:

Just happen to look at the receipt today and noticed that it says they only used 2" piping vs 2.25" that the car has stock. I'm going to try and look under the truck tomorrow, but in the meantime I'm a bit pissed that they basically added a bottleneck by installing smaller pipe vs opening up the exhaust, hence the x-pipe installation in the first place. I'm wondering if this is the reason why I've not got these huge exhaust note gains that everyone is claiming to get.

Magnaflow

I had the local exhaust shop put an X-pipe on in place of the resonator...wasn't impressed. It's been about 8 months and I took it back in...had them take the X-pipe off, put a magnaflow tru-x muffler (similar to the dynomax one on the previous post) on and ran new pipes out the back with oval resonator tips. Sounds GREAT now!!!

At this point I just wanna take a look underneath and make sure they didn't basically install a bottleneck. I want it slightly louder, but not as loud as my 7 since the X is the daily driver and roadtrip car.
