Sway Bar Removal Question

I'm in the process of removing my transmission from my 2002 4.4i X5. I have the exhaust and heat shields removed, the front drive shaft bolts loose and ready for removal, and the sway bar also ready for removal ... but I can't seem to slide the sway bar out the side.

I have the left wheel off, the drop links are disconnected of course, and I have disconnected the thrust arm from the steering knuckle as suggested by TIS.

TIS says push the spring strut forwards and then slide the bar out. Has anyone actually done this? I can't seem to get it to work and could use some advice.

Thanks in advance.
