Sway Bar Removal Question

I'm in the process of removing my transmission from my 2002 4.4i X5. I have the exhaust and heat shields removed, the front drive shaft bolts loose and ready for removal, and the sway bar also ready for removal ... but I can't seem to slide the sway bar out the side.

I have the left wheel off, the drop links are disconnected of course, and I have disconnected the thrust arm from the steering knuckle as suggested by TIS.

TIS says push the spring strut forwards and then slide the bar out. Has anyone actually done this? I can't seem to get it to work and could use some advice.

Thanks in advance.

i think you have to unbolt the sub frame.

I have my AT out, never could get the swaybar out. Having it movable with both ends disconnected and the bushings off the sub-frame you have plenty of space to get the AT out. So don't worry about the swaybar.

Thanks for the advice. It sure seems the subframe needs to be removed. I also see TriX5's point, that with it lose that will be enough to get the AT out. That's good to know it worked for him.

It puzzles me a bit that TIS and the Bentley manual both say it should slide out one side. I might try one more time. I'm thinking I can try two things that might help:
- turn the wheels full lock to the right,
- use a ratchet strap to "push the spring strut forward"

I'll post my end result just for future use by others on Xoutpost.

you have to manhandle that bitch. push the shocks forwards and push and turn the swaybar until it comes out. it really is a pain in the arse

Ok this is probably a dumb thing to ask. But have you removed the two brackets and bushes holding the bar to the underside of the car ?

This part of my transmission removal project was frustrating...but the answer ends up being simple. Remove the two rubber sway bar bushings. It should give you enough room to work the bar out of the side. If you push the bushings up...they will slide right out/off. I did end up removing one side (two bolts on the front strut) to lower the carrier but I'm not sure I needed to do that. I equate this problem to the truck that was stuck in the tunnel...all the civil engineers at the scene couldn't figure out how to get it out without doing more damage...until a bystander suggested letting the air out of the tires! Hope this helps someone that still has faith in their E53!
