Vavle Cover Gaskets replacement.

Hi guys,
I am wondering if I should bring my X for VCG replacement or I have to Do It Myself .
I found a DIY for E34 m62(not a TU),but I think it's pretty much the same.
What is the book time for mechanic?If it's not that costy I may just bring it to the shop.
Any suggestion?

What motor do you have? I'll be doing my 4.4 in the next couple of days...

I had a quick look on the net and found this: YouTube - ‪BMW DIY #10 E46 Valve Cover Gasket Replacement for 3 Series (1999-2006)‬‏. Yes its a 3 series but for the novice its near enough the same job to use as a guide.

Very straightforward. I've pulled the engine apart further than that so the cover gasket remove/refit looks pretty easy. I think the only real thing to be concerned with is the proper sealing of the gasket when tightening down the cover(s), otherwise it'll be a waste of time doing the job! I think I saw an article/post somewhere where someone had put up the TIS showing the sequence in which to tighten down the bolts of the cover aswell as the points where to use the RTV sealant.

I think the job should take no longer than a couple of hours.. Maybe someone else could chime in with any further info/experience...

I would say do it your self. It's not a difficult DIY. And we have lots of info on how to do it.

Do the passenger side first, it's easier to get some idea. On the driver side, I tuck away the two coolant hoses out of the way, this will keep the cursing to minimal during install cause they'll snag the cover. GL

Before I buy the necessary items does anyone know EXACTLY what parts we'll be needing?

My shopping list (so far) looks like this:

#2 (1 set), #6 (1 set), #11 (16 off), #13 (6 off). I already have #8 (2 off) from another time, for a different reason.

Do I need #15 (4 off)? Or is there anything else I have missed?

The reason I ask is because not only is my stealer an hour round-trip (don't want to have to do the journey more than once for the same job!), but because these are not stocked items. Apparently they are 'special order' items meaning that if I order something I don't need they will not refund me!

You don't need to replace #8 and #15, they are not exposed to engine oil like valve cover gasket or grommets. I reuse #8 and #15, no problem so far.

i did mine at a shop a few weeks back....i think its book time was 5 or 5.5? he charged me for 4....new gaskets, and all new gromets....like 24 rings or something....
