The best way is to get a new vapor barrier, clean all the old butyl off the door, then instal the new vapor barrier with new butyl rope sealer. A wallpaper seam roller helps instal the vapor barrier on the butyl, to get it pressed on good for a good seal.
You can reuse the old vapor barrier, but it is all but impossible to get the old butyl off to get proper adhesion and prevent it from coming loose again.
