Still loose
thanks for the tip. tried tightening the bolts. they were already tight. so, problem still persists. would have been too cool to have that be the problem.
it almost seems as if there is an internal gear that is misaligned or has rounded teeth. the mirror just doesn't seem to grab. does anyone know how to take the unit apart, if replacement internals are sold, or any other tips? appreciate the help. danny |

The mirrors are sold as one complete unit, excluding the glass and plastic covering. All the internals plus the triangular piece attaching it to the door are one part number.

Damn, I cannot find that any more..... We have a DIY here where one of us completely disassembles a mirror and replaces the motor with one from China.
Unfortunately I am not able to find that post .......... |

For what it's worth....
http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ff-n-junk.html Now, I've seen a near identical motor at a hobby store around my way, but for whatever reason, didn't get the specs on it. I'll have to make a mental note to do that. Curious on the specs of the above mentioned replacement motor from China.

I have the *exact* same problem described here. I see a lot of threads covering loose mirrors, but this one describes my problem exactly ('04 4.4). I've tried all the standard remedies - resetting with the fold/unfold, checking the torx screws) and neither seems to help. baxterboxer, did you ever find a solution? Thanks.

i did. tried everything to no avail. i ended up having to get a complete new mirror as the threads on the internal gears were stripped. the dealer couldn't even tell me which mirror was the correct oem replacement due to the manufacturing dates. also had to get new glass as well. complete repair cost me around 1100 with friends who were auto body guys with discounts (yes for a mirror). keep in mind the vehicle had to be reprogrammed as well. the cost of this mirror was actually the last straw for me as i ended up selling the truck. too bad. loved the vehicle but it was the most costly car i ever owned!!
