DIY Mirror Replacement

Decided to put the euro split-type mirrors. Got them from a seller in ebay and this is what they look like compared to the factory mirror

You will need:
1. Flatnose screwdriver
2. plastic trim removers (I used a 1inch wide trim remover)
3. painters tape

STEP1
Put painters tape on the bottom of the mirror trim to prevent scratches. Adjust the mirror so its tilting up. Push up your trim remover to meet the center notch of the mirror. Pull the trim remover with the mirror towards you.

STEP2
Remove the disc from the mirror

STEP3
Snap the disc to the mirror assembly. The disc will attach to the motor assembly at the center, 9 and 3 0'clock positions
TIP: clean the disc notches and re-grease them for easy re-install

With the disc on, tilt down the mirror motor and mount the mirror to meet with the 4 locks.
TIP: clean the locks so they slide easily

Once the mirror seems a bit secure, use your trim remover to push down the mirror onto the disc and you will feel a secure click

Clean up and enjoy

Hello,

nice writeup.

When I changed my glasses I pushed the glass part up and it unhooked. The "disc" was not removed with my methode.
Did you have to remove the mirror cover before?

Did today succesfully, took me about three hours

Everything is really narrow and hard to assemble.

What is a split type mirror and what are its advantages?

the driver's side mirror has the same view as the rear view mirror. the passenger side mirror has the convex view.

I just installed one of those 'Euro' style mirrors on the drivers side of the wife's '02 x5. The original, auto-dim mirror had gone bad with double vision (especially at night). It took less than 5 min to remove the old mirror and install the new one. I followed instructions in factory manual. Tilt the mirror fully to the 'down' position (bottom edge fully in), manually rotate mirror housing to the front. Using plastic interior pry bar, pry under bottom edge of mirror and lift glass up. It will pop out of round mounting plate. Remove electrical connections to glass. Install electrical connections to new glass. Place new glass into opening and press down to lock it into backing plate. Rotate mirror housing back to normal position. Text motor adjust functions. Clean fingerprints off new glass, and admire work. Open Beer and congratulate your self on another job well done.

I did this mod too. Make sure you press the new mirror down so it is fully seated or it will bind in the housing, causing you to curse your bad luck until you realize you screwed up. Or so I've heard...
