X5 4.8is smoking. Dealer taking forever to fix!!

I have an 06 4.8is that is still under CPO until the end of the year. Recently started to occasionally blow some smoke out the exhaust and burn through oil pretty quickly. Seemed to happen when left idling for a while. Read on the forums that it may be Oil separator or some other valve. Was hoping it was a simple fix.

Well took it into the dealer 6 weeks ago and still no fix!!

They said it was an issue with the head and valve seals and it was at the machine shop. Then they were waiting on parts from Germany. Now head is back at machine shop and if this doesn't fix it, they will have to order a new head.

I have been driving their 328i loaner car and can't beleive its taken this long. I JUST WANT MY TRUCK BACK!! lol.

Haha. I am! Put about 2,000 miles on it already. I was planning on selling my X5 as soon as I got it back too! Thats the sucky part.

I think that it's time to rebuild the heads... Did you note the oil level? It's normal or lowing? Mine has the same problem a few week ago, after change the valves (over the heads), the car still burning white (smell strong) and if harder accelerations, puffs smoke one time. If she stay idle for one minute and you give a hard rev with a puf of blue smoke then white... be ready for rebuild the heads.
Sorry the english, but it happen with me. Hope to see it solve in your car too.

Just got a call from my dealer....They are going to replace both heads! Replacing the Valve stem seals it's still smoking. So two new heads are on order now. Damn.

that is appalling how many miles have you done??

this disgusts me that these motors are really built as throw away items

what happened to the days of the good old, small block chevy.

no wonder those old push rod motors are still in use in boats, i have twin 4.3 efi,s in my boat and those things last forever, run all day at 4000 rpm and are dead simple to work on

I have a little over 80k. I'm just disappointed at how shitty the service department is. Not surprising though!

Very low millage for valve guide issues, I wonder if something causes this or if that’s just how long they last.
It sounds like there’s no replaceable valve guides in these things so when the guides wear out, the only solution as far as BMW is concerned is to replace the heads.
Replacing valve stem seals when the guides are worn is a very temporary solution at best.
I wonder if it’s possible for a machine shop to fit removable guides, or even valves with oversize stems.

you can bet your life a machine shop could repair them, but as the car is under wty BMW will replace with new, they wouldn't want to warrant an out sourced repair, which is probably a good idea

but if you had one out of wty and had to pay for the repair that would be a very different matter

Well the took the heads to a machine shop first. Had them replaced and it still smoked. So now they are replacing the heads.
