on board computer

Hi all,

Im a new x5 owner in the UK and having a few problems

I recently went to BMW to have a few options turned on the computer (autolock doors etc)

After waiting an hour the master engineer, i think he was, told me that they couldnt communicate with the car and was probably because i had taken out the stereo and MID controller (under the business cd). Is this correct and if so how have others who have fitted there own stereos solved this?

Another issue, possibly related, is that the stalk controls work intermitantly. I have the correct loom and stalk adaptor and has been fitted professionally but we are all at a loss!!

Hoping somebody can help me with these issues..

thanks

Hi,

as I have seen here some guys have moved their MID into the glove box. Shouldn't be a big thing to do so - at least temporary until your master tech has done his job.

Good luck.

You still need the MID (or whatever type of headunit you had before) in order to see the OBC readouts and reset/adjust them, such as fuel consumption/timers/etc. However, in order to perform some coding, such as automatic doors locking, this can be done with the MID taken out too.
For instance, at some point I had the 16:9 unit busted and I had it removed to pass it to a repair shop. During this time, I could still mingle with the NCS and change all the values in there.

As about the stalk issue, what exactly is not working? If it is an ibus issue, you should find some error stored, such as "..telegram timeout for whatever module..".

hmmm...
this makes this worse then as they said they couldnt communicate with the obc. If this is correct then it possibly points to another issue??

The stalk just intermittently works as in turn ign on it works fine, turn ign off and then on again and it has no function..

Well, like the name says, the MID displays information only, it doesn't compute the information displayed there. So, without a MID or with a broken MID for example, you can still connect to, diagnose and even code the car. However, I guess I am missing something out here, since the car was inspected by a master engineer at the dealership and this is what they came up with. As a last resort, you could indulge them and temporary bring them a MID from a friend with another E53.
There always is the all-around solution for the BMW electrical issues - disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes
