What is required for upgrading to OEM 16:9 Navigation?

Looking to make this upgrade in the near future and was just curious about all the parts needed to make this system work.

In addition, if any of you know of somebody getting rid of this system, please let me know. Thanks.

why bother?

Why oem? There are kits for aftermarket double din units now. You can feed the stock amp, and gain nav, bluetooth, ipod, satellite radio, etc. Not knowing the details of your X... it might take a complete re-integration of your stock radio harness. Count on sourcing and installing a GPS antenna, and nav from this era typically relied on info from the speed pulse info, typically generated from the tranny and could be found at the Body Control Module or sometimes the speedo. On top of all that, you would have outdated maps unless they were updated somehow.

Hello steven, I too want to do an oem upgrade.
what you need is a lot of stuff depending on the options your X has already.
if you tell us we can show you what to elimintate
I just dont like the look of anything aftermarket for the X.
1. retrofit harness <- easier or OEM harness<- harder
2. nav computer dvd/cd drive - Mk1 - 4 <- 4 is the newest for e53
3. navscreen and tapedeck behind it<-some reason some people just sell the screen
4. New radio-mounts in rear of vehicle - where X is prone to flood
5. gps antenna
6. Nav cd/dvd - online free to about 100.00.
7. hardware mounting brackets for rear left of vehicle
8. a dremel or saw
9. install guide, time, and patience
10 this site since a few members already did it and wrote walk throughs
11. complete retrofit kit in the US is almost 3000 bucks - BMW X5 2000-2006 E53 BMW X5 E53 Navigation COMPLETE Retrofit Kit although I have found cheaper parts on UK ebay.
12. the abillity to rip your X apart and put it back to together again.lol

Options: Aftermarket that fits in OEM slot like Dynavin & Hualigan, aftermarket double din made by more reputable manufacturers, or OEM retrofit.

My thoughts are: to be honest, the aftermarket options like Dynavin & Hualigan (sp?) are cheap Chinese junk with too many bugs to make them a 'recommended' option IMHO, if you are going to go aftermarket spend the extra to get a decent brand double din unit (Alpine, Sony, Kenwood, whatever you like) Problem is they are not the same size as the OEM unit so you will see that its aftermarket.

I still wouldn't recommend an OEM retrofit to a non-nav car either, for the costs and work its just silly - OEM nav is fine when it comes with the car, but its not that great to make it worthwhile to install it afterwards IMHO.

Just my 2p.

Harness, the replacement harness is plug and play and therefore easier than the retrofit harness but you have to either open the door to connect the speakers or cut the existing wires near the doors and make the hook-up.

You will also need:
Onboard Monitor with Cass player
Mk4 Nav computer
OBM Radio which goes in the trunk/battery space
A CD changer or other device that will interface music media
GPS antenna
DVD with Map software
+$150 for dealer to reprogram the ECU to acknowledge the OBM set-up

You will need to:
Remove the left trunk covers
Trunk floor
Rear seat cushion (not the seat back)
Front seats
Console
Rear carpet can be lifted out of the way
OE Bizz radio

I think none of the after market set-ups look any good once installed and so I went with OE. But I do also realize this hardware is pretty ancient in design and so it really depends what you want from it. Our Xs are commuters/school bus for the most part. So minimal Nav ability and some kind of music reproduction is enough. Others want all singing, all dancing Nav and opera style music hall.

At the time I created a longish thread in the NAV section of the board.

Good luck.

thanks all for the advice. it's seems much easier to just wait and make sure that when i upgrade to an E70 it has OEM nav.
