I'm not sure if you have a 4.4 or 3.0 but take a look at this post.

Yeah, This is a good one. I have met Civdiv. He's got it together. And a machinist as a hobby so he was able to make the special tools.
If you decide to punt, as I did at 131,500mi. w/ my ZF5HP24. May I suggest 1stStopTransmissions in AZ.

Ive had mine rebuilt. There is a comon weak point in the ZF transmissions. The Torque Converter shits the bed, and gives you that stutter, shimmy or what every you wanna call it. I had mine completly rebuilt for $3700 with a 3 year unlimited milage warrenty.

If I had to do it all over again, I would pull the tranny my self and just replace the TC for $500.

Hey Skidmark, yer back! All good? I still have the -5 as a daily driver. Probably 8 or 9 K miles on the homegrown rebuild now, with a handful of spirited roadtrips also.

Hi Jordo,

what do you call stutter, shimmy, .... ? Is that what I describe here: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...on-broken.html ??
And: does a 2002 3.0d have a ZF transmission?

Thanks in advance,

Helmuth

Skidmark X5 Is Back!

Indeed civdiv99, all is good.
My X5 is back & better than ever.
When the trans was down I took the opportunity to look around & "freshen-up" a few other things.
Was pleased to see the rear main seal was doing its job. Not a drop of oil from anywhere. Changed the rubber grommets in both drive shafts, fastners at the manifolds, the usual. Gotta love the Germans. Stainless Steel exhaust from the manifold all the way back. Zero rust, zero issues. Just used new fasteners and re-assembled.
Powerflex bushings all over up front & new Bilstien shocks in the back.
New tires; loving that Ultimate Drive.

Happy to meet you for a cup of cofee sometime.
Best regards,
Skidmark X5

Skid-

Seeing that you did the Powerflex thing, we do indeed need to meet again. No doubt I'll be needing to check some stuff out.

I'll shoot you a separate note.

I am in the middle of rebuilding mine right now (5hp24 for the V8). I'm not sure I would have tried it if I didn't have access to a lift. I dropped the entire exhaust as one piece, and the tranny is 200+ lbs...so have a buddy to help. I had mine out in less than 4 hours, stripped in around 2. So far it has been pretty straight forward. I had 148k on mine and it looks brand new inside, except for a fragged needle bearing and a snapped o-ring. Excellent posts here like the CivDiv's and TriX5's, and a few on land rover sites, will essentially give you the script on what to expect. I might not even bother with the ZF manual, some jaguar guy posted the pdf of it u can download, but it's not very good. I've used the parts manual mainly. You will need lots of clean bench space for the internals, parts washer would be nice, but I was able to disassemble with no special tools. A torx T-27 is about the only tool I've had to buy so far. If you are replacing clutch plates, some are held in by a simple snap-ring, but the ones in the back are a little trickier, but I saw a guy's post where he used a $5 sink drain from home depot for the tool. It's a big job, but worth saving $4k or more if you got the time and the inclination.
