Oil capacity

I have a 2002 X5 3.0i I've read the oil capacity was 6.9 quarts.
But I just changed my oil and I've put about 8 quarts in and the oil is only midway between the notches on the dip stick.
I let it run for a minute to get the oil where it's supposed to go, and let it sit for a few to let it drop down to measure...but still supposedly missing half a quart.
What gives?

Per the manual, your 3.0 holds 8 qts, as does mine...
If you put 8 qts in, as opposed to the 'about 8', let it run a couple mins, and let it sit for several minutes, you should be close to top notch of stick, if you are inserting the stick all the way.

If the full 8 are in, you need to let it drain a few/several mins: those 8 qts are not dropping to the pan in a couple mins, esp if not fully warmed up.

I Looked in the owners manual and could not find a capacity spec. Google m54 oil capacity, found a post from blog.bavauto which said 6.9qts.
But if it's supposed to take 8 I guess I'll go add a little more.

At the top of this great site's page is a tab that says Online References; hit the tab, drop down, see PDF Docs. Click on E53 Ref Docs, first line: up pops a list of Model Year Manuals. Click on yours, 2002...it is the entire Manual.

Try the Index, a handy thing: see Capacities, page 173.
It is 8 qts, pasted below from that source.

Thank you. I was looking under oil instead of capacities
