found the cause of back wiper problem

Hi all my car was acting weird for a while, the back window washer fluid was running constantly all the time even with the car turned off, did a lot of troubleshooting until I figured out the cause of the problem.

The motor rear window wiper motor had an ic or capacitor burnt, not sure what is it.

the following photo should show it,
My question is what is this ?? I can read the numbers R090141 with the letter M in a circle i think stands for motorola. is this an ic?

Can this be fixed instead of paying $ 300 for a new motor?

It is an IC. If you can get a better picture where you can read the numbers you may be able to do a search for it online. Then you have to be able to remove the old IC and solder the new IC onto the board without damaging either. This is a "surface mount" rather than a "through hole" type.

Not one of my favorite things to do. I gave up board repair when the through hole to SMD change became more widespread. Too fiddly and much too easy to damage and/or short the solder lugs. Not to mention if you can actually find the correct one!

SMD(surface mount devices) removal, you can buy soldering tip with the SOIC(Small Outline IC) footprint or use heat-gun to melt the solder and lift the SOIC chip one row at the time using small flat screw driver once the solder melt.
In any rate be careful not to disturb the other parts. You can search youtube for "SOIC removal" video..

Looks like that SOIC has popped from junction overheat (can't tell for sure), it's a good idea to check if you have short or burned motor etc, IC don't just overheat w/o any reasons.

Good luck with your repair, that looks like a bit of a tricky one. But if it does not work out, you can find a new one here for the E53 X5.

thank you every one for replay , by search the rest of the numbers I can read I found it out to be MC33286dw made by motorola but not sure if I will find a replacement for that or not. I might end up buying a new one

I had the same problem and I did the same repair with mine, see here:

I was unable to find the MC33286DW (it is no longer produced) and instead used a MC33289DW bought from digikey for about $4. The ICs were almost the same, except pin 10 -- you'll see what I mean when you compare the datasheets. The only problem was that the washer wouldn't work after the repair (not sure as a result of pin 10, or some other failure on the board.)

I am by no means an expert, but I didn't have any problems with the desolder/solder of the SMD IC with a plain soldering iron with small tip and some flux.

The repair lasted about 16-17 months before the same IC burnt out again. There must be some other defect on the board and I'm surprised there aren't more failures listed here.

I tried the repair again but some of the pads lifted when I desoldered and just ended up buying a complete new unit. I wish the circuit boards were sold separately as the motor is fine. I should have looked to see if the circuit board on the new one was the same.

Very nice write up pmt , I wish i seen your post before , I been crazy finding the problem. I switch front motors, I took off the wiper switch attached to the steering wheel , I even took it to BMW dealer and they couldn't find out what was wrong.
I don't really use the back wiper but sad to see my Bimmer in need for something and I don't fix it.

I found the IC on one web site and I sent a request for a quote but honestly I don't know if I can solder this with my shacking hands I might find a computer store or someone can help me out with this.

Again I really appreciate your help and your time helping me finding a solution.
