Got an insurance quote on a 2012 X5M, fully covered, 3-year, 30K miles, for $3200. Buy that if it helps you sleep at night.
I think I could put up with all the worries for the performance, because I'm well acquainted with what can go wrong, how much it costs to repair it, and so I can choose between a warranty or just start a maintenance account that will cover repairs when the time comes. Remember, there are quite a few service bulletins out that service known issues on the X5Ms, and also many more X5Ms out there that you hear nothing about, because they haven't caused any trouble. We always hear "all the trouble"... I want me an X5M...!

I had insurance on our E53. Got it once it finished the 4 year mark.
It paid for itself and then some. I think I netted up 9-10K paid via insurance YMMV depending on how well or not the adjuster cooperates with the shop |

Yes the E70/E71 problems are well documented. Problem is that everything is electrical, and everything has a sensor or module on the 07-up models, so DIY or just a quick diagnostis with DIS is out the door on those models.
I wouldn't purchase something I'm not easily able to DIY or work on/diagnose myself. Unfortunately, making these cars complex over the years has also contributed to them not being as easy to work on at all.

^Idk ask some E70 owners. Problem is you dont use DIS/INPA on those models so I think its requiring more dealer visits for stupid things.
However I'm sure there are many happy newer E70 and up owners, hell, I am considering an E70 diesel someday, just need to do more research.

When I bought my E70 in Feb. I went 6 cyl. It is by no means a guarantee - I had a fuel pump leak that was covered under the extended warranty - but I'll trade the ultimate in power for a few less problems. The diesel guys seem to have their share as well.
Fingers are crossed at this point. |

Yes , I guess most of the problems are with the turbo's blowing oil , very expensive ,and a lot of the guys on the forum are regetting buying the 5.0 or the X5Ms............
