Angry Clime Control Dead

Hi all,

I have a 2003 x5 4.4i automatic which I had given to my friend to use for a while. He returned it to me with the climate control dead.

The condition of the climate control is that when i say dead i really mean it, its dead no turn on of lights, no turn on of screen and even the buttons when i press them they feel like they are stuck in "in" position, they don't move at all.

When I turn on the car and the lights, all the buttons inside lit up except for the buttons on the climate control. I asked him what had happened and he just said he never used the ac so he doesn't know.

i was wondering what could be the possible problem and what is the best way to go about diagnosing this. I live in the UK by the way.

Many thanks for your help.

Regards,

Shvan

I don't have the service manual with me but I suggest looking at fuses first.

If the buttons feel dodgy it sounds to me like your 'friend' may have spilled something on them??
Try removing the panel with the switches and see if theres anything sticky behind it?

If all else fails get him on the Jeremy Kyle show, hook him up to a lie detector and find out what really happened

If it is totally dead, chances are it is not getting power at all to it. The unit itself may be fine. You can pull it out and inspect it by prying on one side with a credit card. I don't know the location of the fuse but I know there is more than one fuse/relay box on these vehicles. Surely a fuse or relay is out somewhere.

thanks for the suggestion guys. i took it out today and you will not believe what i found.

as soon as i pulled it out the face came off the unit, it looks like somone had tried to take the control interface off it and had damaged it as result.

I have ordered a second hand e39 climate control unit from ebay, it looks exatly like the original with the same number of buttons and everything so i hope that will fit.
