No, my suggestion for the backlights would be if you lost whole sections of the display. Somehow you've got pixels not working... as bcredliner said above.

BTW on mine (182k miles now), I had 2 backlights go out (and replaced all 5 with new), and have not a single pixel bad. No record of the PO having any related fix, but the repair records I got were incomplete, so maybe mine is relatively new.

Had no idea they could repair this issue... found a place on the web that does it for $200. Looks like they are currently out of stock at the moment.

BMW e38, E39, X5 and M5 Instrument cluster repair, lifetime warranty

Turns out this place is not far from where I live. I'll just take it in

Took mine there a couple years ago to be repaired. They did it while I waited. Took about 20 minutes.

thats great, how were you able to keep all your pixels from not going out? did you replace the instrument cluster?

Stay worried.

He's got the 3.0i, which does not have the same chain guide concerns that the V8's do. But, for everything else on srmmmm's car, especially the AT with original fluid, ... and Wow.

The instrument cluster is original, but I did have to sent the radio display out for pixel repair. I try not to run the dash lighting any brighter than I need to at night.
