Well the reason I replaced mine wasn't because of bad seals or whatnot— it was because the front driveshaft had that common issue of being too short so it slipped out and destroyed all the splines in the front output shaft of the transfer case. I got an extended driveshaft from Cobra Transmission which requires removing the transfer case, so I figured I'd get a good condition used transfer case with good splines. I bought one from a 4.6 part-out for around $200 + shipping, which is cheaper than buying a new output shaft from Cobra Transmission for $450. I then replaced the chain in the transfer case before popping it into my 4.6. Overall it wasn't too bad of a job, I did most of it in one weekend

2002 4.4 Sports Package, Graugruen (442), 200,200 mi.

In the last 3 years between the OP and me, $10K has been spent reconditioning this. I rebuilt the transmission with upgraded clutch packs, tore the engine down to a long block and replaced wear items(engine uses no oil why rebuild), rebuilt the front suspension and steering, rebuilt the xfer case, new Juibo's, and extended front drive shaft (not stripped, more is better). The OP, rebuilt rear suspension, new cooling system including electric fan (I still put new hoses on), new air pump for rear suspension, new window switches, and more.

Why? I know of 3, 2002 X5 in this color (US spec) and a couple of export ones, 1 wrecked of the 3 and the one on the front of the owners manual.

You went the right way going the used/freshened unit route.

With a stripped front output spline, the rebuild cost approaches $500 DIYing.

The $2000 or more cost of a rebuilt/warrantied unit is criminal. The worn out TCs can be rebuilt in under an hour, for under $200 in parts, if F output spline is un-stripped.

Yep. The trickiest part was finding a used 4.6 transfer case, since the 4.6 uses an LWX-500 transfer case and not an NV-125 transfer case like all of the other 4.4 X5's. The LWX-500 uses the same chain, but a lot of the other parts are different. There are no clips holding anything together— it all just kinda fits together. No chain retainer spring either. It was quite an interesting process to rebuild the LWX-500, given that just about every tutorial out there is for the NV-125.

Okay I bought mine 2 years ago with 98K and now have 118K miles. I did all of the great maintenance (cooling system overhaul, timing guides, chain, suspension refresh, trans service, fuel pump) at 104k miles. At 110K miles I replaced the AC evaporator. She is good to roll over the 200K miles mark. These engines are durable providing the correct maintenance is performed on them.

So what does a vehicle with 327,000 miles really look like? The make-up is off and there's even some upskirt shots! But as you can see, the only thing that shows the use is the driver's seat!
