That looks like a screw thread, does the motor housing come off the latch mechanism itself?

heading out for the night....letting the unit heat up inside...maybe it will magically start working tomorrow. I'll send pics out in the AM.

Reckless, try the thread below.

It might help you out with at least getting the light turned off. If the motor is still working, maybe you just need to adjust the stops for the hatch.

I reinstalled it to see if it would come back to life and it hasn't. There were two more screws to take off and some clips but I can't seem to get it off.

Unless there are anymore suggestions, I'm just going to replace the unit.

My old man told me to keep quiet about his Grand Cherokee and me calling it a POS now.

Id be pushing the catch up and seeing if I could hear a switch click when you do. It has to be a sensor switch so if you can get the unit open then you can replace it. If it can't be opened enough you may just have to replace the unit however I reckon there are a few more things you could check before going and buying a new unit. You need to short the switch to make the electronics think that it has been closed and if that works it is definitely the switch, if it doesn't then it could be anything else further up the line and you may be wasting your money buying a new mechanism.....

My Mrs has the X5 today so I can't even have a look for you.

I received a new unit today from Silver Spring and it worked and installed great. No extra pieces, screws or bolts with re-assembly!

Interesting that they may have changed the mechanism as it seems to really pop out and the motor has a completely different pitch to it.

$250 or so. I called my local BMW shop and asked if they could match Silver Springs price. They said "you must be mistaken, that's our cost". I said, aside from shipping, I can buy it for that price....and they wouldn't match it. I probably would have bought it from them if they would have split the difference.

Obviously your sensor idea may have been cheaper but it's winter here and I don't have time to mess around with stuff like that not even knowing if it's going to work....but thanks.

No that's fine. I'm a tinkerer. Sometimes it saves me money sometimes I end up breaking more than I initially needed to fix. I think in the long run I'm ahead though. Had I needed to fix my tailgate latch before I'm sure I would've been a lot more help.

Glad that it's working now though
