DIY AC Belt and Tensioner, Engine Belt and Tensioner/Pulley Replacement 3.0
TOOLS IN MY DID, I USED mm SOCKET SIZE, IF YOU DON'T USE mm SOCKET, USE SOCKET TOOLS SUCH AS 5/8 INCHES ANH 9/16 INCHES SOCKETS ETC. PARTS: READY: IF YOUR X5 IS EARLY MODEL (2000-2001), ENGINE BELT TENSIONER SHOULD BE MACHANICAL TENSIONER. MY 2004 HAS HYDRAULIC TENSIONER IN THE PHOTO ABOVE.

Your parts picture shows an Engine pulley (i'm guessing this is called the Idler pulley?), a deflector pulley, two tensioners and two belts. I'm rounding up the parts to do this swap, and would like to know what else I need besides the hydraulic tensioner, Idler pulley, AC pulley/tensioner, and the 2 belts?
I've been going off ECS's website for reference and it seems you have an extra pulley that they don't list? |

RB - Yes it's called Idler pulley or Deflector pulley.
No extra pulley, the "engine belt tensioner pulley" is for hydraulic tensioner. When you buy hydraulic tensioner, you have to buy a separate pulley for it and it is 'engine belt tensioner pulley'. What year of your X? may be your X's tensioner is mechanical not hydaulic, in case your X tensioner is mechanical type, you don't have to order a saparate pulley for it. They came together with pulley if it's mechanical tensioner.

My X is mechanical now, but I am going to upgrade to the hydraulic design since it makes really bad noises, and although I have only 61k the tensioners and belts are original and 9.5 years old! (ECS sells a retrofit kit with needed parts for conversion), just wanted to be sure I needed the right parts, i.e. Idler pulley, hydraulic tensioner WITH engine pulley, AC tensioner, and 2 belts. |

Did this last month, very easy DIY, I also replaced my radiator hoses, thermostat, expansion tank, temp sensor and water pump (stewart performance), and flushed the radiator.

Thanks for the job!!!
I wonder if the X5 4.4i has the same routing diagram belts with the X5 3.i Also do I really have to replace any of the tensioners or I could just use the same ones by saving more money and making my job much easier. |

I actually think it may have taken one less bolt, but my indy mechanic took care of it for me! Just order the kit from ECS (retrofit hydraulic tensioner kit) and you'll have all the parts you need! They include the mounting bolts and such anyways. Everything was plug and play, and actually my fan clutch was bad so he fixed that too!

Wow Ricky, that's the fastest response i've ever gotten in any forum.. lol
I actually ordered mine from Autohausaz and I believe it does come with all the mounting bolts. I am suppose to get the package today so I'll find out when i go home for lunch. I'll get it done this weekend or next weekend, mine is making similar strange sound as yours.
