5W30 Castrol Syntec is all I've ever used in my 2001 X5 with 206,000 miles on it. And I live in Michigan, which is also a cold weather climate.

BMW recommended oil. NOBODY has done more testing on engine life/performance in regard to oil type/weight. If anyone says otherwise they are talking out their azz.

I use Mobil 1 0W40.
The '0' grade helps to have oil everywhere fast when the temperature is very cold. I use it in the X5, and used it for 8 years in my E46 with very good results. Also the Mobil 1 0W40 is BMW approved. |
