What's with the horrible resale value??

So I was looking at trading my 2005 x5 4.8is even up for a same year/mileage Porsche 911 C2. I would be laughed at by looking at the values. My truck cost more new then the Porsche based on MSRP's, but the Porsche seems to be worth about 50% more then my truck!!

BMW's really are high maintenance piles of crap hey!?!? Same with Audi... This seems to be the case with most all models of BMW. Pretty sad really...

Porsche definitely have higher resale than bimmers down under. But Bimmers here also seem to sell quite high 2nd hand, 7 series being an exception. I suppose people know they cost a bundle to maintain. But then so do Porsches
We get ripped from the very beginning in OZ, where a lot of goods are sold at a premium. European goods here are always overpriced to give the illusion of being superior and maintain a higher status when they are quite simply way overpriced when new for what they are. They may be better in some ways but are still a rip off. Options anyone?

Nobody will even take my truck in trade for a 5 year older 911 with the same miles. They laugh at me. My truck cost more then a 2005 c2, yet it's not even worth a 99 c2 in trade. Guess I'm gonna stick to Porsche, lol.

anyone can buy a luxury car but not everyone can afford to own one...oil change at bmw dealer $300 u can buy a decent BMW for pretty cheap but u are taking huge risks on buying one unless u are DIY guy...people are scared of buying used bmw..just for two reasons not knowing how to work on them and risk of having to spend alot on repairs at dealer...i had done all of work myself on my x5 by reading and watching u tube and of course cant forget "specialty tools" but i love it and i will not drive anything else other then BMW. well maybe infinity

Well put.

Infiniti is no good though, they really don't have the same feeling as a BMW though

Diesel E53s have strong resale value down under. V8s not so good and IL6s pretty weak.

My attention was caught by this thread and wanted to give some inputs and other point of views. You guys out there are so lucky to pay a much lower cost compared to us here in the 3rd world. Price (due to import and luxury taxes for corrupt government officials) for imported cars here (euro or anywhere else) cost around 300% of the blue book value. e.g. a used good conditioned 03 E53 4.4 in the US would cost around US$20k, you multiply that 3 times and that would roughly be the cost here. Yes, US$60k (peso equivalent). I paid for my 03 E53 for US$47k (peso equiv) For Porsches, an 03 911 Cabrio on ebay motors costing US$20k cost 4 times here or roughly US$80k (peso equiv). This pricing applies to brand new models as well. Now here's the good part, there are a dime a dozen European, American and other imported car indy car shops/mechanics in the country and I pay 50% - 80% lower labor cost versus you guys. OEM / replacement / genuine BMW parts however cost +30% versus the real value.

So, the long and the short of it is I envy you because you pay 30% only of what we pay to own these babies but we can certainly afford to maintain them.

Now, comparing the cost of acquiring and maintaining a Japanese or Korean car to our BMW (or other European cars) is another story.

Yeah, Im pretty surprised to see Porsche(a niche unpractical sports car) hold much higher resale then the BMW's. I am bummed because I thought I could do a lateral trade year for year wise. Oh well, guess I'll just twin turbo the X5 instead.

i don't know brother i drove 2006Q45 and loved it well ofcourese it was 300horses v8 with bose sub in the back rear reclining seats ....ooooohh ...what a beast i l fell in love..but infinity is notorious for having too many useless ugly buttons for everything..and it was kind of a big boat...and u are right obsolutley nothing handles and performs like a Bmw, even the bmw interior is designed so well, i love cars so when a new one comes out i compare them and how well they stack up against others ...some 2011 models have uglier interior then 1994 bmw.

'Course there's the other side of the coin re: bought my X5 for a song almost 4 years ago and still daily driver. Almost bought another one for one of my adult kids just for the safety aspects of the model since she's a new mom. Then figured that I like workin' on mine but 2 = potential to be chore so gave her a Toyota instead.
