Bad coolant leak...is my expansion tank bad?
I was driving today and noticed the low coolant lvl warning went on. I drove home and filled up the coolant tank with about 1/4 gallon of coolant. I drove 3 miles and when I restarted the car after letting it sit for one hour, the low coolant lvl came on again. I drove home and added more coolant. When I added more coolant it immediately started leaking to the ground really fast. It seems like that it was leaking under the tank. My mechanic just replaced one of the coolant hoses a few months ago. It didn't seem like the leak was coming from any hoses. I know that the coolant expansion tank cracking is a common issue. Am I able to diagnose the problem without taking apart anything? Is changing the expansion tank something pretty to do? Thanks for the help.

If you can fill it up (carefully, spilling will make it harder to trace) and trace back and up to the source of the leak. Expansion tanks are common, but so are failures of most any part of the cooling system. Its pretty much all plastic.
BTW its going to be much easier if you start with everything dry. But a large enough leak you would still be able to trace back to the source. Sent from my SGH-i917 using Board Express |
