Wow; where was this post a few weeks ago when I had the same problem?

I bought a repair kit from an eBay seller, but just needed one part from it. Cost with shipping was $31.

Do you really need the cylinder or only the part where the cylinder is mounted?

Can I program the $60 cylinder to my key, or will my key only work with the $90 cylinder from BMW? Thanks

The cylinder is a purely mechanical deal, so no "programming" can be done to it. That said, you can't put just any old cylinder into the thing and expect it to work, as the cylinder has to match your key. You can get one like that through BMW, after providing proof that it's really you that owns the car. I heard the cylinders were a bit more expensive than $90 though; not sure what you'd get for $60.

Question is: are you sure you need a new cylinder? BTW: why?

X5 lock repair kits

To fix the 'spinning barrel' syndrome, we offer this repair kit (also for the X3 and E46) that does not require recoding the lock or keys.

RegulatorFix BMW X5 E53 Door Lock Repair Kit - Front (left or right) : Amazon.com : Automotive

BMW x5 Door Lock | eBay

Also on our website:

RegulatorFix.com

or on ebay, store name: RegulatorFix

or contact directly:

[email protected]

BTW: still looking for a detailed DIY (write up, photos, video) or link.
If someone is willing to make one, I would 'donate' the lock repair kit!

What do you mean by spinning barrel? This just happened to my 2003 X5 today. Key turns 90 degrees either way, but does not unlock door. Fortunately, one of my keys still works remotely. But don't want to chance it stops working.

The barrel will spin the entire way around with no resistance. I believe yours is also broken in a similar way. That kit will fix it. Although be warned, the kit I recived had some parts with poorntolerances and were way too tight or too big. You may have to reuse some of your original lock.
