Does my gas milage seem right? way better than I thought

I have a 4.4i and do mixed driving. I have been testing out the gas mileage on this thing and its better than I thought. The highway driving is straight road at a steady 80-85mph.

I am getting 27 highway and 22-24 with the mixed. this is the case every time i fill up and check again. trust me i'm not complaining but I thought it would be lower.

I know that since I don't drive it hard that there is plenty of power to move the weight efficiently. My 2.5t xc90 could not get this type of mileage because the power wasn't there and it had to work to hard to move the weight.

Also, Ive owned both the 6cyl and 8cyl grand cherokee's. The 8 got far better gas milage for the same reason.

Does this seem like normal mileage?

Other factors : i'm in the northeast, brand new tires, its black so its obviously far more awesome ha.

No, that is not normal mileage. While you have the power to move that weight, doing so burns fuel, and more than you are reporting.

Check your math. And don't trust the OBC.

...If the OP is really getting 27 hwy and 22-24 'mixed', BMW will want to buy back the car for testing to discover your secret engine.

Suggest a couple three tankfuls, and some simple arithmetic.

He's from Hershey The whole town smells of Chocolate. It's gets those people on a chocolate high and most of them are delirious. Just kidding some of my best friends are chocolate.

That does seem a bit high. My 6 cylinder struggles to get 19 on the hiway and 16 around town and country.

Your title is professor, you're not a math professor by any chance...? more joking sorry can't help it.

Ah feeling the love. yes I am a professor and am very capable of doing the math. I have not yet done the math manually for the x5's mpg. I was just going off the OBC. I have had it for about a month and a half. I thought it sounded high. My xc90's OBC was dead on so I thought this would be pretty darn close. I got the 27.xx twice over a 300 mile highway trip. After I made the trip I thought that I would check it again so I rest it and got the just about the same results. I reset it again when I knew I would be doing a lot of mixed driving and got an avg. of about 22.

I will have to fill up and do the math manually next time to see what it is. I guess my mpg bubble will burst.

PS. living in the land of chocolate is awesome

Have you recently changed your tire size? That could contribute to the higher than expected MPG...

Ah, Prof...you misconstrued the endearments.

It is simply that your highway and 'mixed' both sounded spectacularly high, based on many of us having read the near monthly new thread of "what is your mpg" that come up here continually. Thus, your data seemed to be an anomaly. Diesel: yes. V8 gas, hard to believe.

Look forward to future reports. I love chocolate, esp dark chocolate, and we had a great time at H Park with our granddaughter.

I know it's all in good fun. I'm a member of a lot of other forums and I get that it is all in jest. My experience with many other vehicles also made me think that this was high so thats why I posted. I'll see what I come up with on the next fill.
